My old black wallet

This isn't the new one.

I bought a new wallet today. $22 bucks at a clearance sale at Shoes for the Soul. Heck of a deal.

I can now retire my old wallet, one I’ve had for at least 15 years. I’m not entirely sure just when I got that old wallet. Mom bought it for me and I know I was still in high school. I graduated in 1997 so at minimum we’re talking 15 years.

While I don’t remember the date I do remember the circumstances. I needed a new wallet and asked Mom to get me one (spoilt brat that I was). She said sure (saint that she is) and I asked for a brown one.

The wonderful world of meat

My focus has been shifting these days. I feel a bit like a compass, trying to find true north when it keeps moving, shifting on me.

meatamerica.com

My compass has been pointing more towards meat these days. Butchering to be precise. Now when I say butchering, I don’t mean just taking a side of meat and turning it into something tasty, I mean going from the living animal to the plate. Maybe not all at once, but you know what I mean.

Nowadays I suspect when most people hear butcher they think of the man behind the counter, ready to prepare serve you up some tasty steaks. That’s all I had in mind as well, until I got to talking with some folks about my recent experiences helping a farmer slaughter his pigs and sheep.

Good morning, elk

A 5x5 elk. If you look at the tip of left beam you'll see the nubbin of a sixth tine. Not legal to shoot. This year. You can just make out his buddy behind him.

I started my Saturday off in slippers and a housecoat,  stalking a bull elk with a camera in hand.

It’s about as far as you can get from our prehistoric ancestors reaction to seeing an elk, but in today’s world of hunting regulations and vegan landlords, what can you do?

I woke up early this morning and wandered around the house, threw a log in the woodstove and wandered out of the livingroom. When I next returned I happened to look out into the dim light of 7:45 a.m. and and saw the elk.

There were two of the beasts scraping through the snow just at the edge of our clearing, looking for greens buried under the crust. The elk sedately walked back into the bush, having eaten greens in our backyard for 10 minutes before deciding to move on.

Crystal and I watched them from our living room, hunched down to avoid spooking them. We only saw one clearly, a bull with five tines on each beam, which means he isn’t legal to hunt. Looking through the binoculars we could see one beam had the beginning of a sixth tine, meaning that guy will have to watch out next fall.

After they started to move away I went outside, gently moving to the left along our deck, snapping pictures as I went.

And then they came back

Just as I was about to hit “Publish” on this post, I happend to look out the window and saw the elk had returned. I snapped some more photos, taking advantage of the better light. The same 5×5 elk came closest but I got hints of the other bull, which I think had a much larger rack.

Looking at the photos closely, the older bull had at least six tines on one beam, which means he’s legal to hunt. I wonder if his decision to stay farther back from the clearing had any relation to someone hunting him earlier?

In appreciation of the ski movie

Screen caps from All.I.Can.

One of my favourite gifts this Christmas was a copy of All.I.Can., a ski movie.

I hadn’t thought much about ski movies before I took up skiing this winter and I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Sure, I’ve seen a few before, but I always felt a little reserved around the films, not wanting to appear like a poser or something ridiculous like that.

Anyway, what with learning to ski (whoo first blue run on the 31st!) I decided I wanted some inspiration and there’s been a lot of hype, positive chat and awards for the Sherpas Cinemas 2011 film, All.I.Can. so I figured I should start there.

One of my favourite segments is Chapter 5: Imagination. The chapter went viral online (you can watch it below) for good reason. It’s a perfect match of music and action. The understated music and glimpses of a skier moving through an urban setting compliment each other well.

The sparks of a ski’s edge on pavement. A drop of water shaken loose by his passing. Slushy snow thrown into the air.

It’s easy to imagine skier JP Auclair with an iPod plugged in, hitting his hops, jumps and carves in time with the music.

There’s a good interview from Brobomb.com about Imagination. Segment director Dave Mossop told Brobomb (Brobomb, Brobomb, Brobomb) the segment came together unnaturally easy.

[A]s we drove to the interior JP started reminiscing about how, as a kid, he would look out the car window and visualize a skier hitting every little patch of snow and jibbing everything possible. I think a lot of people have shared this fantasy at sometime in their life, and I think that’s why this segment has turned out so powerful.

I’ll let the segment speak for itself. If you get a chance to see All.I.Can., take it.

Do you have a recommendation for a ski film I should watch? I hear there have been several produced by locals. Leave your suggestions below.

No hare today

I’ve decided to keep a snowshoe hare hunting journal, keeping track of conditions and success.

No luck today. I woke up to several inches of new snow and the snow didn’t stop falling all day.

It was just me today, Nick’s still in Saskatchewan.

I went out to the usual hunting grounds, arriving at 9 a.m., and I had to park far down the forest service road and walk.

I saw some tracks that were likely from earlier in the morning, maybe yesterday, but nothing fresh and no animals at all. I suspect they don’t come out when the snow is this regular.

It was a wet day. I’m thinking of changing up my attire for hunting. I usually go with long johns and quick-dry pants, but I think I’ll wear rain pants next time it’s this wet.

Conditions

  • Light snow.
  • -0.4C in the morning, 0.5C in the afternoon.
